about

The soundscape for this ambient piece was inspired by a painting that accompanied a YouTube video of a recording of “Gymnopedie No. 1.” The painting was of the impressionist style, and depicted the silhouette of a man standing on a street sidewalk, holding an umbrella, staring into an atmospheric urban backdrop of blues and purples. “Naked” is meant to craft a soundscape from the perspective of that man in the painting. The track is mostly comprised of field recordings: conversations I had with my roommate (discussing the mysterious UVB-76 shortwave broadcast while sitting on my front porch on main street in Murfreesboro), pleas from the homeless, and an insane German man ranting. I also used recordings of footsteps, doors slamming, raindrops, and cars passing. I took my piano performance of “Gymnopedie No. 1” and treated it with reverb. This created a cloudy, rainy, and dreamy atmosphere. The band Godspeed You! Black Emperor heavily influenced this track, specifically their clever use of field recordings to transport the listener to another place.
